Introducing our macrame plant hanger kit

Learn macrame and make your own macrame plant hanger with our kit from Juniper

Welcome to the Cosy Craft Club's macrame month! We really want to encourage you to have a go at macrame, and we'll be sharing the key things you need to know to get started. You can find all our macrame posts in one place here.

Every month at Cosy Craft Club I send out a kit to try a different craft to subscribers. January’s kit was a DIY macrame plant hanger kit from Juniper. Making the plant hanger was easier than I thought it would be! I’ll show you what you get in the kit and how I made my plant hanger.

Firstly, here’s the box! Since the final product has a ‘planty’ theme I couldn’t resist surrounding it in plants. Sadly one of the plants has since died - house plants are difficult to keep alive…

And let’s open up the box, so you can see what’s inside…

Taking everything out, you can clearly see here what is included in the kit: some beautiful cotton yarn, wooden beads and a wooden ring. There is also an S-hook not shown in the photo - this is really useful as it’s easiest to do macrame when it’s hanging up.

The plant hanger uses only two macrame knots, so it’s quite quick to pick up what you need to do. This picture shows me making a square knot, which is the first stage of the plant hanger. A square knot consists of knotting the outside two threads of a group of 4, and then repeating it in the opposite direction. Creating a row of these knots makes a beautiful strong cord. I found took a little practice to get them even and neat - but with a bit of tugging and pulling, they seem to be looking ok!

After the square knot section comes the spiral knot. It’s very satisfying to see the spirals come together - they look so intricate but they’re actually really simple.

And here is the finished plant holder. I was so impressed how lovely it looks, especially with a plant in it. The hardest part was getting all the sections the same length so they hang right, especially around where the pot goes. But I think it looks fairly even - I even used a ruler!

This was the only way I could get a decent photo with the whole plant hanger in the shot :)

I'm looking forward to deciding where to make its final home though. My mission to fill my house with plants is slowly being accomplished! Where would you hang a plant hanger? And what plant would you put in it?

I do love seeing what Cosy Craft Club subscribers make with their kits, and the photo below is from Anna who shared it on her blog La Petite Anne. Didn’t she do a lovely job?!

This was a really fun project to make, and I loved seeing how the simple macrame knots come together to make these beautiful ropes. This kit is available from the Cosy Craft Club shop here if you’d like to make your own plant hanger!
